We are celebrating pro bono all month throughout October! MVLS could not provide free civil legal service without the generosity of our pro bono panel providing justice for all. Throughout the month we will be recognizing volunteers who have made a difference amongst our six legal areas with their pro bono efforts. Learn more about Yollette S. Atkinson’s impact below.
Why is Pro Bono Important?
My upbringing has always revolved around helping others and giving back. Growing up with my grandparents, every weekend we volunteered to provide meals to and/or run errands for the elderly, homebound or homeless. Volunteering is engrained in my life and I absolutely enjoy it.
How is taking a case making a difference in your community?
Life gets tough for everyone at some point in their lives. We don’t always have someone to turn to for help. I was blessed to have the knowledge and skill to help others, so why not. It feels wonderful receiving thanks from clients that thought they were alone, and that someone was willing to help.
Why do you take cases in your particular legal area?
I need to feel competent when speaking with clients about their legal issues. They are trusting me to guide them through situations they feel are difficult, embarrassing or even life shattering. I have been practicing for many years and have learnt so much about my practice areas, that taking cases in those areas doesn’t feel overwhelming. So this knowledge allows me to ease their minds and help them to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
