2015 Celebrate Pro Bono Awards Reception
Volunteer of the Year: Natalie Collins, The Law Office of Natalie T. Collins
MVLS presents this annual award to a volunteer lawyer who has contributed the most to our pro bono program through either individual client representation or expansion of the delivery of pro bono legal services. Ms. Natalie Collins was selected for her acceptance of 73 pro bono cases since 1988, and her longstanding willingness to accept last minute complex family law cases for individuals who otherwise would go unrepresented. Ms. Collins has also volunteered her time to further professional training to MVLS staff; most recently she conducted a training on juvenile issues for MVLS intake paralegals in August
Law Firm of the Year: TBMG LawThis annual award is presented to the law firm that has provided significant services to MVLS clients either by representing many individuals or using significant firm resources for one client. TBMG Law has done both, and was selected because of their representation of low income clients with a variety of legal issues, including complex family law and bankruptcy disputes. But that isn’t an exclusive list, as TBMG attorneys accept cases based on the need, and accept a diverse areas of legal matters including adult guardianship, estate planning, name changes, taxes, housing, landlord-tenant, other real property issues, and criminal expungement. Just in FY15, TBMG Law accepted 15 new clients from MVLS. This award recognizes both the substantial contribution of TBMG Law made to MVLS clients this past year and the longstanding commitment to pro bono demonstrated by all members of the firm.
Partnership of the Year: The Law Offices of E. David Hoskins, LLC and Alice Young, Nusinov Smith LLP
Mr. David Hoskins and Max Brauer of the Hoskins Law Firm have been regular volunteers at our Consumer Protection Project Clinic, and has represented seven low income clients in consumer disputes this past year. Currently the Hoskins Law Firm is providing representation to victims of Neil Lewis through class action litigation to help protect them from collection actions for funds they never received. The Hoskins Law Firm has made a unique and significant contribution to furthering our mission this past year.
Over the past year, Ms. Alice Young has demonstrated a substantial willingness to represent low income clients, mentor MVLS staff and law student interns, and train MVLS volunteers on important aspects of estate planning law that have helped our program expand services to vulnerable Marylanders across the state. Ms. Young was also instrumental in helping to plan the inaugural future planning clinic at the Park West Health System, which serves low income individuals who are HIV positive.
