Trying to navigate child support regulations and guidelines and filing for child support can be confusing.
Our child support factsheet, Child Support Factsheet, provides helpful guidance.
Some of the things you’ll want to consider:
- Every parent has a financial responsibility to support their children.
- Child support is based on a proportion of each parent’s gross income and which parent is the custodial vs. the non-custodial parent.
- A child support case may be opened either through the appropriate court or child support enforcement agency.
- Child support can also be requested and obtained as a part of a divorce or child custody case.
- An existing child support order may be modified if the party filing for modification can prove there has been a material change in circumstances since the prior ruling.
- All family law matters before the court involving children are decided in the best interest of the child(ren).
Once you have decided to file for child support, you can complete the necessary forms and gather documents to support your case.
Our factsheet includes links to the forms, where and how to file, details of the process, and other helpful information.
If you are income eligible, you may be able to obtain legal help through MVLS.
