Helping Up Mission
About Helping Up Mission
Helping Up Mission has served Baltimore for over 140 years. Its mission is to transform lives and restore hope for individuals facing addiction and poverty by combining faith, science, and community.
Supporting Workforce Development and Recovery
Helping Up Mission provides a wide range of services to support men in its workforce and recovery programs. These services help individuals build the skills and stability needed for long-term success.
- Digital literacy training for basic computer and email skills
- Financial literacy programs in partnership with Truist Bank and PNC
- Credit counseling with Bank of America
- Resume workshops to prepare for workforce re-entry
- Educational services, including high school diplomas and adult basic education
- Legal aid services, including expungement and court advocacy
Why Partnership with MVLS Matters
Helping Up Mission partners with MVLS to host expungement clinics for residents. These services are critical because legal barriers can prevent individuals from securing employment and maintaining long-term stability.
As Brian Vincer, Assistant Director of Workforce Development, shares: “A criminal background is the biggest barrier to sustainable employment, and sustainable employment is critical for sustainable recovery.”
Through this partnership, participants can address legal challenges they may not even be aware of—ensuring their progress in recovery is not hindered by unresolved legal issues.
What’s Ahead: Recovery Park
Helping Up Mission is developing Recovery Park, a new greenspace at 1100 E. Baltimore Street. This space will provide a safe environment for men and women in recovery and graduates to exercise, gather, and spend time outdoors.
The park will include a walking and running path, a pavilion for events, a multi-use court, an open field, and shaded seating areas. These features will support physical health, mental wellbeing, and long-term recovery.
Strengthening Recovery Through Partnership
MVLS is proud to partner with Helping Up Mission to remove legal barriers and support individuals on their path toward recovery, stability, and independence.
