Community Partner of the Month | Helping Up Mission

We’re proud to recognize Helping Up Mission, as the Community Partner of the Month. Read on to learn more about Helping Up Mission, and their experience as an MVLS Community Partner.

How long have you been in existence, and what is your organization’s mission?
Helping Up Mission began serving our community in 1885. Helping Up Mission provides hope to people experiencing homelessness, poverty or addiction by meeting their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

What/who/how do you serve your community?
Helping Up Mission serves a community of men and women facing addiction or homelessness by providing core needs – shelter, food and clothing. Our approach to treatment is holistic in nature. Our Spiritual Recovery Program integrates those practical needs of our clients with their clinical, mental health, medical, educational, and vocational needs. All of that built upon the faith that, by God’s grace, it can lead to lasting change.

Why do you think it’s important to work with a legal services program, like MVLS?
Our relationships with MVLS and other legal partners are incredibly important to our mission. While suffering from addiction, so much chaos enters life and there are often years of turmoil to clean up as our clients are getting to re-connect with themselves, their families and their communities. Being able to solve issues with backgrounds via expungements, resolving debts and tax problems via tax clinics, or finding representation and consultation for family issues or ongoing legal concerns can bring stability and hope to so many. When it can be easy to turn away and surrender under the weight of the past, these relationships help us encourage our residents to take the next step and re-claim their lives.

Is there anything upcoming you would like to highlight or promote?
We could highlight that we are always needing essential items such as toiletries and basic clothing. We are serving 575 people daily at HUM and also providing essential items to people living in tent encampments through our Street Outreach Program.  Attached to this email is a flyer that highlights our most critical needs.

We could also highlight support for food costs.  A meal at HUM is often the first step toward a new life filled with hope and promise. It costs only $2.30 to feed someone a meal at HUM—and we will serve over 600,000 meals this year!
