Our Mission & Vision

Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) removes barriers to justice through free civil legal help, community engagement, and advocacy for equitable laws.  Our vision is for a fair legal system that is free of injustice and equitably serves underrepresented Marylanders.

Hear What Our Partners Have to Say

I wanted to thank MVLS for being another reliable resource partner for CVCBD. One of the things that stood out from our conversation with Chandler was that he said When and Where. And when he came he really made himself available.

David Fedd, Community Outreach Coordinator
Charles Village Community Benefits District

It was a pleasure meeting with MVLS and hearing about all of the different categories of services MVLS provides. You did an amazing job of presenting each category to us and I consider MLVS to be an incredibly valuable resource to the clients we serve.

We appreciate the work of Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service and the services your organization has provided to our community member

MVLS Community Partner Values

MVLS recognizes the negative historical impact that many non-profit organizations and others have had, particularly in disinvested Black communities, when agencies have sought to provide services without listening to, respecting and learning from those closest to the problems and solutions.  We value and respect the necessary vetting and ongoing trust building that community partners demand from us, and acknowledge that their reputation and support of our work comes with much responsibility on our part.  We value our partners, and seek to work alongside to support their community-based efforts.

At MVLS, these are our community partner values that we expect of ourselves, and seek in our partnerships.

  • Communication
    • Long lasting relationships start with being clear and honest.
  • Trust
    • A relationship cannot grow without trust. We will not over promise, and we will follow through. We hold our community partners to the same standard.
  • Inclusion
    • MVLS is committed for justice to ALL.  We recognize and embrace the diversity of our clients and community partners and seek to meaningfully engage in all activities with a focus on equity and inclusion.
  • Commitment
    • MVLS seeks to partner with programs that are mission driven and have a reputation for leading with integrity and grounding their work in the communities they serve.  We expect our community partners to demand the same from us.
