Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) is proud to be featured in the latest edition of the Management Information Exchange (MIE) Journal, which showcases how community legal partnerships are key to expanding access to justice.
Authored by Chandler Walters, MVLS Outreach and Communications Manager, and Shyia Clark, Workforce Project Coordinator, the article explains how MVLS has spent the past decade building intentional, equity-centered partnerships rooted in transparency, trust, and community voice.
“Equitable engagement is not fast work. It is not flashy. It requires self-awareness, time, and ongoing effort. It demands we move at the speed of trust.” — Walters & Clark
In FY24, MVLS engaged over 11,000 people, reached thousands of families, and formed 50+ new community partnerships. These efforts reflect a consistent focus on building community legal partnerships that respond to real needs, especially in historically underserved Black neighborhoods.

Building Trust, One Partner at a Time
MVLS’s commitment to sustainable outreach began not with a strategic plan but with presence—showing up, listening, and not overpromising. Today, every MVLS team member plays a role in meaningful community engagement.
