MVLS is looking for volunteers to staff our Consumer Protection Project Clinic by providing brief advice at the Baltimore City District Court, Tuesdays from 8:45am-12pm. Sign up for one shift, or many!
Volunteer lawyers meet with defendants one-on-one for a 10-15 minute consultation and provide consumers with brief advice on defending against debt buyer and other consumer lawsuits on the docket that day. They discuss possible defenses, settlement options and help litigants file a Notice of Intention to Defend if appropriate. Volunteer attorneys do not need to enter an appearance during clinic assistance.
No attorney-client relationship is created outside of the clinic environment, and volunteers are not expected to provide full or continued representation to clinic clients. Volunteers may identify clients who would benefit from full representation and refer them to MVLS staff, who will be on hand to help with intake. A staff lawyer from MVLS will be on site to answer questions and provide support to volunteers.
Legal advice in consumer cases is an extremely valuable tool that enables clients to assert defenses that enable them to protect income and assets.
If you have any questions or would like to sign up to volunteer, please call or email Ellyn Riedl at 443-451-4079 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
