What is the IRS Direct File System?

Good news for Maryland taxpayers – The Maryland Comptroller has announced that in 2025, Maryland will be one of the dozen or so states in the country participating in the IRS Direct File system. This new system will allow most Marylanders to file their taxes electronically through a secure, official IRS online platform, entirely for free. This means faster, easier tax return filing without having to pay a third-party tax preparer to file your return electronically.

The IRS is expected to announce the exact requirements for using Direct File this fall. The MD Comptroller has already announced that they are partnering with a nonprofit, Code for America, to create a system by which information from your federal tax return, when filed through direct file, will automatically transfer relevant information to your state tax return.
