Supported Decision-Making – An Alternative to Guardianship
April 15 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Increasingly, legal scholars, advocates, and judges are considering new ways to enhance the autonomy of a person with disabilities. Rather than appointing a guardian who makes all decisions for a respondent, that individual’s voice can be preserved through Supported Decision-Making (SDM). SDM agreements honor the priorities of the individual, employ less-restrictive alternatives to guardianship, and reflect the reality that we all consult trusted family members, friends, and professionals to help make decisions.
MVLS is pleased to welcome Megan Rusciano of Disability Rights Maryland for this Third Thursday training on Supported Decision-Making. Rusciano is a Maryland state leader, writer, and speaker on guardianship and disability and elder justice. She currently chairs Maryland’s Cross-Disability Supported Decision-Making Coalition, is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Elder & Disability Law Section Council and the Maryland Judiciary’s Guardianship and Vulnerable Adult Workgroup, and serves as faculty for Guardianship Attorney Training.
