As families prepare for a new school year, many parents are asking whether their child has the support they need.
In a recent commentary published by AFRO, MVLS team members Payton Aldridge and D’Khyra McFadden offer guidance for families navigating special education services. They explain Individualized Education Programs, known as IEPs, and how they differ from 504 Plans.
First, the article explains that a 504 Plan usually provides classroom accommodations. These may include extended testing time, preferred seating, or fewer distractions.
By contrast, an IEP may provide specialized instruction and related services. Those services can include reading support, counseling, assistive technology, or speech and occupational therapy.
In addition, Payton and D’Khyra explain how parents can request a special education evaluation. They encourage families to put concerns in writing, ask questions, and participate actively in school meetings.
Most importantly, families should not wait when something does not seem right. Early intervention and clear communication can make a meaningful difference in a student’s progress.
