We sent a letter to Governor Larry Hogan on December 16, alongside 17 Maryland General Assembly legislators and 35 organizations from across the state calling on him to fund the Access to Counsel program for low-income renters in Maryland.
HB18, which was sponsored by Senator Shelly Laskin Hettleman and Delegate Wanika Fisher, passed last year and will provide access to legal representation for all limited-income renters in eviction cases over the next four years. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and approximately 111,000 Maryland households are behind on their rent and facing eviction. The urgency of implementing HB 18 has only increased.
We are calling on Governor Larry Hogan to act with urgency, and to fund Access to Counsel without further delay.
