Don’t Miss Out: October 1st Deadline for Maryland Homeowners’ and Renters’ Tax Credits

October 1st is an Important Deadline for Maryland Homeowners and Renters

October 1st is the final deadline to apply for Maryland’s Homeowners’ and Renters’ Tax Credits. These programs help reduce housing costs, but many residents miss out because they either don’t know about them or forget that applications must be submitted annually.

If you own or rent a home in Maryland, here’s what you need to know.

Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit

The Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit can significantly lower your property tax bill. Many homeowners confuse it with the Homestead Tax Credit, but they are different. The Homestead Credit is a one-time application, while the Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit requires a new application every year.

Key Details for Homeowners

  • Annual application required.
  • Apply online or by paper:
  • You must be the legal owner listed on the deed. If your name is not on the deed, you must resolve this before applying.
  • The credit is income-based, with thresholds determined by the state.

For more information, review the MVLS Factsheet on the Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit.

Maryland Renters’ Tax Credit

If you rent, you may also qualify for the Maryland Renters’ Tax Credit. Renters indirectly pay property taxes through rent, so this program provides financial relief to eligible tenants.

Key Details for Renters

  • Applications are due by October 1st each year.
  • The credit can be worth up to $1,000.
  • Applications accepted from February through October.
  • Apply online or by paper:

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Based on income and rent paid.
  2. Must apply annually.
  3. All household income is counted, including Social Security.
  4. Applicant must be on the lease and legally responsible for rent.
  5. Rent paid to public housing authorities or tax-exempt organizations is not eligible.
  6. Applicants under 60 may qualify only if a dependent under 18 lives in the home.
