Trying to navigate the process to legally change your name can be confusing.
Our name change factsheet, How to Legally Change My Name in Maryland, provides helpful guidance.
Some of the things you’ll want to consider:
- Name changes are allowed unless they are for any illegal or fraudulent reason.
- Once the petition is filed the Court is required to wait 30 days in case anyone opposes the name change.
- A child’s name may be changed but requires the consent of a parent or guardian. A minor child’s birth certificate may be changed if the child is under one year of age without a court order.
- A court order is not required to change a name because of marriage.
- Name changes by divorce, adoption, and change in gender identity have specific rules and regulations.
Once you have decided to file for a name change, you can complete the necessary forms and gather documents to support your case.
Our factsheet includes links to the forms, where and how to file, details of the process, what documents are necessary, and other helpful information.
