We are celebrating pro bono all month leading into National Pro Bono Week October 20-26th! MVLS could not provide free civil legal service without the generosity of our pro bono panel providing justice for all. Throughout the month we will be recognizing volunteers who have made a difference amongst our six legal areas with their pro bono efforts. Learn more about Sheereen Middleton’s impact below.
Why is Pro Bono Important?
Pro bono ensures meaningful access to justice to millions who need legal representation but cannot afford it. It improves public perception of the legal profession and is my form of philanthropy.
How is taking a case making a difference in your community?
Taking cases remove the shackles of debt from my clients. Whether it is stopping a garnishment, lawsuit getting rid of unsecured debt, or improving their credit, all of my clients are grateful for the opportunity to be out of the overwhelming weight of consumer debt and the pitfalls that come with having too much of it.
Why do you take cases in your particular legal area?
I accept pro bono bankruptcy cases because consumers who are seeking out bankruptcy relief are in dire need of it. The burden of debt, coupled with the embarrassment and stress factors adversely impact their mental health, relationships with others, and even their perception of their own selves. Everyone deserves a fresh start, and bankruptcy relief should not be unattainable because they are not able to pay an attorney’s full fee. Financial freedom is a subject matter I’m passionate about, and it starts by being debt free.
