MVLS Celebrates Pro Bono Honors at the MSBA Legal Summit

MVLS closed out the Maryland State Bar Association Legal Summit & Annual Meeting with a celebration of pro bono service.

At the event, members of the MVLS pro bono community received honors for their commitment to access to justice. Their work helps Marylanders facing urgent civil legal challenges.

Bill McDaniel received the Distinguished Pro Bono Volunteer Award. Bill is a former longtime Ballard Spahr partner and now serves as senior counsel. Throughout his career, he has championed justice through pro bono service. In addition to his work with MVLS, Bill has supported organizations such as Human Rights First, the ACLU of Maryland, KIND, and other partners.

Antonio Gioia, Esq. received the Lee A. Caplan Award. This award honors a solo or small firm practitioner who has provided pro bono service over many years. Antonio has volunteered with MVLS since 1993. Since then, he has contributed more than 100 hours of service to MVLS clients. He brings compassion, patience, and care to every case he accepts.

MVLS’s Tangled Title Project received the Herbert S. Garten Special Project Award. This award recognizes a project that improves legal services for low-income individuals. Through this project, MVLS helps homeowners prevent home loss, clear title issues, and plan for the future. In addition, the team supports volunteers and provides more holistic services for clients.

Together, these honors reflect the heart of MVLS’s work. They show the power of dedicated volunteers, strong partnerships, and innovative legal projects.

Congratulations to Bill, Antonio, and the MVLS Tangled Title Project team. We are grateful for their leadership, service, and commitment to justice.
