Home appraisals are often perceived as unbiased assessments, but recent findings from the Abell Foundation reveal a stark reality in Baltimore. Homes in predominantly Black neighborhoods are systematically under-appraised, resulting in lower market sale prices. Simultaneously, these properties are over-assessed for taxes, burdening Black families with higher tax bills.
At MVLS, we witness firsthand how this disparity impacts our clients. Black families struggle to accumulate and pass on wealth due to undervalued properties, while facing a disproportionate risk of tax sale foreclosures.
To address these injustices, MVLS and PBRC (Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland) are hosting a series of tax sale prevention clinics this spring. If you or someone you know needs assistance, join us in combating these challenges and securing equitable outcomes for all homeowners.
