National Estate Planning Week is October 20-27th! MVLS could not provide free civil legal service without the generosity of our pro bono panel helping to stabilize communities through estate planning and administration. Learn why MVLS Volunteer, Perneita Farrar, M.Ed., Esq., participates in our My Home, My Deed, My Legacy (MHMD) Clinics, and why other volunteers should consider signing up for our November clinic.

Why is Pro Bono Important?
There is a significant disparity regarding those who have access to legal resources, so it is important to expand their access and lessen the disparity/help them navigate the court proceedings.
How is volunteering at a clinic making a difference in your community?
Despite Maryland having plenty moderate-income families, there are certain communities, such as Baltimore City that have less community resources, while having a greater need for representation especially with issues dealing with landlord/tenant, foreclosure, and estate planning.
Why do you sign up to volunteer at our MHMD clinics?
I sign up for the MHMD clinics because the practice areas covered in the clinics can have the most impact not only on individuals, but their families and the communities at large. These clinics help to secure the most basic human right…housing as well as promote generational wealth, which will strengthen the socioeconomic status of those communities long term.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering at a clinic?
Volunteering at a clinic is more than transactional. The citizens we serve are rich in knowledge about the issues that directly impact their lives, which may not be obvious to its leaders. Therefore, every client interaction offers a mutual exchange of information.
