Volunteer of the Month | Elizabeth Pugliese-Shaw

Why do you choose to volunteer with MVLS?
I had been volunteering with the Montgomery County Pro Bono Program for years and wanted to expand my practice to help others. My entire practice is founded on helping low income folks. MVLS lets me do that.

Are there any recent cases that you’re proud of? Tell us more about what happened, or about what you learned.
Tell us more about what happened, or about what you learned. Gosh so many. A recent one, was a literal abandonment case. We don’t get many of those. But the other party just left the house one night and didn’t come back. The client needed a divorce to settle things, along with custody and child support. Of course, as soon as we filed, the opposing party fought back and wanted custody of the kids. Kids he hadn’t seen in over a year. Even with a PL order giving him access, he refused to show up because it wasn’t the arrangement he wanted. Getting client primary residential and tie-breaking on legal custody was great. Even better was the child support that was now happening.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with or supporting MVLS?
Do it. It will be a way you can make a difference in someone’s life. It’s one thing you can do to fight against the things that are going on that hurt the average person.
