We’re excited to recognize Nakea Barksdale as the Volunteer of the Month. Read on to learn more about Nakea and her experience as a MVLS volunteer.

Why do you choose to volunteer with MVLS?
I chose to volunteer with MVLS for a few reasons. First, I wanted to gain practical experience in areas of the law where I can make a direct impact in my community. But more importantly, I understand how frustrating and overwhelming it can be to navigate the legal system alone. I’ve seen how meaningful it is to simply have someone by your side advocating for you, especially when your rights, reputation, or future are at stake. I wanted to give people the kind of support and guidance I’d want for myself or a loved one in that position. To me, it’s not just about legal representation. It’s about showing people that they matter, that someone is listening, and that they deserve a fair shot. MVLS makes it easy to connect with clients who truly need that kind of support. The right guidance, even in what may seem like a small matter, can open doors and change the trajectory of someone’s life. I’m grateful to be a part of that process.
Are there any recent cases that you’re proud of? Tell us more about what happened, or about what you learned.
Recently, I’ve been working on several criminal record expungements cases. Many of these clients assumed they had no options, or that their cases had already been expunged under laws that were supposed to do so automatically. Being able to walk them though the process and ultimately deliver that sense of relief, knowing that a weight they’ve carried (for decades, in some cases) has fully been lifted, has been incredibly meaningful. These cases have reminded me how powerful even small acts of legal assistance can be. For clients, expungements aren’t just about cleaning up a record. It can mean better job prospects, access to housing, and a real chance to move forward.
What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with or supporting MVLS?
Even taking on one case can make a difference. Many of us went to law school wanting to help others, but the demands of work and life can make it feel like we don’t have time. The truth is, MVLS makes it doable. The support, the resources, and guidance they provide make you feel confident and equipped from start to finish. Whether you’re early in your career (like me) or years into practice, pro bono work with MVLS offers a chance to reconnect with why so many of us entered this profession in the first place… to help people, to advocate, and to use our knowledge to make a difference.
