We’re excited to recognize Tamika Hopkins as the Volunteer of the Month. Read on to learn more about Tamika and her experience as a MVLS volunteer.

Why do you choose to volunteer with MVLS?
I volunteer with MVLS because it aligns with everything I believe the legal profession should be—grounded in equity, service, and access. As someone who grew up locally and graduated from an HBCU law school with a strong focus on social justice, I’ve always seen the law as a tool to uplift and empower. MVLS gives attorneys like me the structure and support to do exactly that—especially in areas like estate planning, where our work helps protect generational wealth and bring stability to families. I deeply value MVLS’s commitment to meeting people where they are and breaking down barriers that keep too many from getting the legal help they deserve.
Are there any recent cases that you’re proud of? Tell us more about what happened, or about what you learned.
One case that really stayed with me involved helping a woman transfer the deed to her home after her father passed. She had lived there for years, but never had legal title in her name. Through MVLS and the estate planning cohort, I guided her through the probate process and helped her record the deed. The moment she realized the home was finally hers was powerful—it wasn’t just about documents; it was about dignity, security, and peace of mind. That case reminded me how even a “simple” legal task can completely change someone’s life and outlook.
What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with or supporting MVLS?
Do it. If you went into law to help people and make a difference, this is where that mission becomes real. MVLS offers great training and community support, so even if a case is outside your usual practice area, you won’t feel like you’re doing it alone. What you give in time or expertise comes back tenfold—in gratitude, growth, and the knowledge that you’re truly helping someone through a critical moment in their life. It’s meaningful work, and there’s real impact in every single case.
