Volunteer of the Month | Tina Azarvand

Why do you choose to volunteer with MVLS?
My connection with MVLS began when I was still a law student, where I spent the majority of my time working with the MVLS tax clinic and has continued ever since. As a tax attorney, I’ve witnessed how complex tax issues can devastate low-income families, and being able to use my legal knowledge to help clients overcome what seem like insurmountable obstacles – whether it’s resolving an IRS dispute or handling back taxes – has shown me the vital importance of pro bono service in our community.  I continue to volunteer with MVLS because I believe that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, deserves access to quality tax representation.

Are there any recent cases that you’re proud of? Tell us more about what happened, or about what you learned.
A divorced mother with two college-aged sons came to us seeking assistance with a tax liability and setting up an installment agreement. While reviewing her return, we discovered that while both sons were full-time college students who did not earn any income, the American Opportunity Tax Credit had only been claimed for one of them. After locating the missing Form 1098-T for the second son and determining his eligibility for the credit, we prepared an amended return to claim the additional education credit. This adjustment will reduce her tax liability by more than 50% – a significant relief for this pro bono client who has been assisting with her children’s education and welfare on limited resources. Cases like this highlight the value of providing thorough pro bono tax services, as sometimes even overlooked tax credits can make a substantial difference in a taxpayer’s financial situation.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with or supporting MVLS?
MVLS offers a unique opportunity to make a concrete difference in someone’s life while strengthening the community. Whether you can take one case a year or several, every hour of pro bono service helps bridge the justice gap for Marylanders who would otherwise face overwhelming legal challenges without representation, so consider taking at least one case!
